Customers Preparing for Largest Power Shut-Off Ever

Sacramento area residents are included in the more than 800,000 PG&E customers alerted to possible de-energization due to high fire risk. It is expected to start early Wednesday morning at 12AM and continue until Thursday afternoon (10/9-10/10). 

Together with traffic lights and ATMs, gas pumps may be inoperable by Wednesday. The shutdown would last in some places for five to seven days.

How to prepare for possible power outage:

  • Confirm or update your contact information with PG&E
  • Create a safety plan for all members of your family, including pets.
  • Prepare an emergency supply kit. Include enough water and nonperishable food to last your household one week.
  • Building or replenishing emergency kits that include flashlights or other illumination devices, spare batteries, a first-aid kit, emergency food and water, and cash.
  • Learning how to manually open your garage door.
  • Unplugging electrical appliances to avoid overloading circuits and preventing fire hazards when power is restored.
  • Charge phones and other electronics ahead of time and use portable charging device/batteries.
  • Use any form of stored power and external batteries including solar chargers, hand-cranked chargers and car chargers.

NorCal School Closures: 

  • Amador County Unified School District has announced it will cancel school for all of its students Wednesday. The district says it will send out an update by 8 p.m. Wednesday if schools will also be closed on Thursday.
  • El Dorado Union High School District schools will be closed Wednesday. The district says it will notify families by 8 p.m. Wednesday if schools will also be closed Thursday.
  • Esparto Unified School District in Yolo County is canceling all classes for Wednesday and Thursday.
  • Gold Oak Union School District in El Dorado County has canceled Wednesday classes.
  • Mother Lode Union School District announced that all its campuses will be closed Wednesday and Thursday.
  • Rescue Union School District in El Dorado County has canceled school for all students Wednesday. Extended Day programs are also canceled.
  • Solano Community College is closing all four of its campuses on Wednesday. No online classes will be held either.

There is a possibility that other school districts may cancel classes Wednesday.
