Katy Perry gets political at Brit Awards

Explodes giant Donald Trump skeleton.

February 22, 2017

At the Grammy Awards 10 days ago, Katy Perry made a tastefully subtle statement of resistance against the current Trump administration, but tonight at the BRIT Awards, she wasn't quite so subtle.  While performing her new hit single "Chained To The Rhythm," she had larger than life skeletons of Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Theresa May doing a little backup dancing for her.  But then at the end of the song they caught fire and eventually exploded.  So there's that.  I go back and forth on how I feel about stars getting political.  It's a dangerous game of course, because if you get too partisan (no matter left or right), you risk alienating half of your audience.  I appreciate when artists can make their points smartly or tastefully (as she did at the Grammys), but I don't think tonight's display from Katy was either of those.  Regardless, she has every right to use her fame to share her opinions, and one of the things I've always liked about Katy is that she's never been shy about saying how she feels.

Here's a link to a British article about her performance if you'd like to see photos of Trump Skeleton!
