Joe Exotic's new pen pal believes he's "going mentally insane" while he does time for the murder-for-hire plot to kill Carole Baskin and the 17 charges of animal abuse he was convicted of.

According to the Daily Mail, the 57-year-old former zoo owner wrote back to 29-year-old pen pal Kathleen Lafferty describing what his experience has been like in a federal prison.

In the letter, obtained by the Daily Mail, he wrote:

"Katie, Just got your card today they hold my mail a month for some season. They do all they can here to make my life suck. Locked down 24/7 alone, can't even call Dillon. My soul dies a little each day, not long and my heart will stop like an animal that morns (sic) itsself to death, can't eat the depression is so bad. They won't let me just fit in cause they are scared I might talk to the press."

After signing "love you," he asked Kathleen to also share a photo of his message to the media on Facebook.

In his media statement, he explains that he is unable to purchase shampoo, conditioner, or other "basic health care needs" with commissary, which he says he does not get. He also pleads for President Trump to pardon him to "make the world smile during this pandemic."

Kathleen, who is from Wisconsin, told the Daily Mail that she felt compelled to write to Joe Exotic having been in the system herself.

"I ended up in a type two facility in solitary confinement, so I know what it's like," she said. "Normal people don't know what it's like and how dangerous it is. ... I think he's going mentally insane in that cell. He said 'I love you' in the letter."
